What a pro does

A cold radiator in a working system is a distribution problem. On steam, a clogged or stuck air vent keeps steam from ever entering that radiator, and a vent that has gone silent is the most common single finding in an old basement-boiler house. On hot water, the same complaint usually means an air pocket or a valve that's partly closed, and the pattern of which radiators are affected points at where the air collected. A tech also verifies the boiler is holding proper pressure and that the piping pitch hasn't shifted, because a house that has settled over a century can leave a steam line draining the wrong direction.
